From the Divers Direct archive: preparation of cylinders and backup gas sources03 / 03Calm underwater starts on the shore. In the Independent Diving programme, you will focus on your own decision-making, planning and readiness to handle a situation without direct help from a buddy. You will learn to see a dive as a whole: from choosing suitable conditions and preparing your equipment to returning in good time.

With the instructor you will discuss redundant breathing gas supply, equipment arrangement and problem-solving. First you will practise everything in the pool or confined water, only then will you transfer the skills to open water. No. It is intended for experienced divers. You need to meet the stated age, number of dives, total time underwater, rescue certification and experience in three specialisation areas.
Stress & Rescue is a required certification. For Deep Diving, Navigation and Night & Limited Visibility, the standard allows at least five experience dives in each area to be provided instead of certification. The instructor will review the records in advance.
The programme includes the use of a redundant breathing gas supply. Please arrange the specific configuration and availability of hire in advance with Marek. A second regulator on a single cylinder is not, by itself, an independent gas supply.
No. It always depends on the environment, conditions, the limits of your qualification and the rules of the site or operator. You will also use self-reliance in ordinary diving with a buddy.
SSI standards allow a maximum of four students per instructor in the water. We will agree the group size according to the training conditions.

Marek KušiakOpen Water InstructorSSI Open Water Instructor #117682
Sidemount enthusiast. He tailors training to the experience and needs of his students.
He started diving in 2006 with IANTD and over the years took courses in many diving systems with many instructors. Time and gradually gained experience have shown that courses across all organisations are very similar and that, overall, the instructor’s approach matters more than the name of the system. This is what he tries to follow during teaching and he adapts courses as much as possible to the students.
After a shoulder injury, he left technical diving for a while before deciding to try sidemount. Since then, he has fallen in love with sidemount diving. He currently mainly teaches this form of diving, which opens up new and interesting possibilities for beginners as well as experienced divers.
Divers Direct regularly organises one-day and weekend Events and diving expeditions for members of its club. And you can continue with follow-on courses right at these events.
